Great Brew Pub in Hastings, MI

While in Michigan, our family met up with some friends for dinner at the Waldorf Brew Pub & Bistro, a family owned and operated restaurant and brewery.

The menu offers a wide variety of creatively assembled meals from which to choose; soups and salads, gourmet burgers and sandwiches, steak and fish entrees, and even wood fired pizzas. Lindsey and I both got 6-inch wood fired pizzas and split them with each other to get the best of both
worlds:

#3 Pesto Veggie – Pesto, balsamic grilled zucchini, artichokes, roasted peppers, kalamata olives, goat cheese, mozzarella and pine nuts.

#8 Fun with Fungus – The mushroom lover’s dream. White sauce, grilled portabellas, crimini’s and buttons laced with fresh sage and asiago.

Left: Fun with Fungus  Right: Pesto Veggie

We ended up enjoying each other’s pizza choice more than our own, so it was a successful trade-off. However, they were both truly delicious. The sage, mushroom and asiago was a new flavor combination for my palate; one I will be doing more often. And the goat cheese on the pesto veggie reminded me of how wonderful cheeses other than mozzarella and parmesan can be on pizza.

Before I finally decided on pizza, I had my eye on the Portabella Burger: Wood grilled balsamic marinated portabella mushroom cap with sweet roasted red peppers on a ciabatta roll with pesto mayo.

And let’s not forget the Waldorf’s fine handcrafted beers, ranging from smooth and easy blondes to rich and creamy stouts. They offer specialty and seasonal beers, as well as their regular brews which are always on tap:

Bistro Blonde Amber Waves
Bee Sting Honey Rye
State Street Stout
Hopnoxxious IPA
Cobain’s Double Dark IPA

And for their seasonal selections:

Sundance Summer Wheat Ale - made with sweet and bitter orange peel, and hints of coriander
Jedi Pale Ale
Malted Milk Baltic Porter – imperial style porter infused with malted milk

Not only can you get a flight of beers to see what you like best, you can also take some home with you, either as a 6 pack or a 64 oz Growler. My brother, Charles, brought his empty Growler glass back for a refill…

Charles and his Growler of Amber Waves.

To keep up with all of the honey festivities, I went with the Bee Sting Honey Rye – it was smooth and refreshing, not too hoppy.

Tasting homemade brews is always fun and I love to see these family owned and operated joints. So if you’re ever in the Hastings neighborhood and looking for a tasty bite to eat and a razor cold brew, I highly recommend this pub.
